Making Mince Pies
I've got something sweet for y'all today! Since I am completely obsessed with all things to do with England, I decided that I was making some mincemeat pies this Christmas. Mince pies aren't really a huge thing here in the states, so you can't go to the grocery store and by pre-made mincemeat. So imagine my excitement when I found out that my mama and my aunt made some this Summer and canned it for the Winter. I don't think I have ever been so excited about jared fruit in my life! So here is how I made my first mince pies.
The Mincemeat
1 peck pear (ground)
2 boxes raisins
2 cups dried apples
5 cups sugar
1 pt. pecans
1 can crushed pineapple
Spices to taste: cinnamon, allspice, and cloves.
Cook slow 30 minutes or until thick
Can Hot
Now, this will make a lot of mincemeat, multiple Mason jars. I only used one jar for my recipe, and it made eight pies.
The Pies
Since this was my first attempt I went the easy route and used pre-made tart shells and rolled pie crust, but if you want to make everything from scratch, you most certainly can! So, this is what you'll need.
Mincemeat
Tart shells
Rolled pie crust
1 egg
Star-shaped cookie cutter
Pastry brush
-Heat your oven to 350
-Fill tart shells with mincemeat
-Unroll pie crust and cut out star shapes
-Place stars on top of pies
-Beat one egg and brush egg on top of pies
-Place pies on baking sheet
-Bake for 25 min. or until brown
It's as simple as that! I hope you enjoy my family's mincemeat recipe. If there is something that you or your family do differently, I'd love for you to let me know in the comments. If you've never heard of mince pies, let me know your favorite Christmas treat.
XOXO Kayla
